Direct detection of gravitational wave (GW) signals marked the dawn of GW astronomy. One of the most important next steps is conclusive identification of the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. In this talk, I will review expected EM signals from neutron star mergers. In particular, I focus on optical and near-infrared emission powered by radioactive decays of r-process nuclei. By observing such emisison, we can study the origin of r-process elements in the Universe. I will show the current status and some latest results from EM follow-up observations of GW sources.
