"New Insights into Star and Planet Formation from Resolved Observations of Young Binaries"

Young binary stars with separations of a few to a few hundred astronomical units share a common environment and composition. This provides a serendipitous laboratory for the study of primordial circumstellar disk evolution as a function of stellar and binary properties. For our sample of ~100 young Taurus and Ophiuchus binary systems, time domain photometry, from K2 and ground-based, and angularly resolved adaptive optics imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy, primarily from the 10-meter Keck II telescope, constitute an unusually rich data set with which to examine the individual stellar, circumstellar, and binary properties. Given that most stars at least in the solar neighborhood are located in binary systems, it is important to understand circumstellar disk evolution and the potential for and modes of planet formation in multiples. Furthermore, the study of the individual binary components controlled for regional properties in their host molecular clouds also provides unique insights into the star, disk, and planet formation and evolution processes more generally. I will highlight some initial exciting outcomes of this research.
