Amanda Karakas

Associate Professor, School of Physics and Astronomy Monash University, Australia

Amanda’s primary area of research interest is in the evolution and nucleosynthesis of sun-like low and intermediate-mass stars and the origin of elements in galaxies. The story of the origin of the elements is intimately tied to the processes of stellar evolution, which describes how stars change with time as a result of nuclear fusion. One focus of her research is the intriguing mystery of the production of heavy elements in stars, that is, elements heavier than iron. While astronomers can explain the origin of most of the elements in nature, the type of the stars that produced the heavy elements is still highly uncertain, especially in the early Universe. Prof. Karakas’ research has been focused on the role that low and intermediate-star stars play in this story.

Amanda Karakas is a Melbourne-based artist who works mainly in oil paint and acrylics. Amanda has been painting with oils since 2019, training at Fitzroy Painting, in Melbourne, Australia. She is a part-time artist where her day job is teaching and doing research in astrophysics at Monash University, having completed her PhD in Astrophysics in 2004. Her work takes her to many corners of the world, and these travels provide much of the inspiration for the paintings she creates. Primarily a landscape artist, Amanda takes inspiration from the natural world to evoke an inner emotional landscape. Amanda's art explores the notion that landscapes are not static but shift and change, much like our emotions and mental states. Color and texture are used to reflect the moods found in nature, where landscapes can be at once desolate, brooding places and other times full of hope and beauty.
