  1. What is a neutrino?  Why are astronomers so interested in detecting neutrinos emanating from the sun?  What is the  status of Super Kamiokande, the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, and Borexino?  What are their most recent results?  Check out the textbook for website information at 'Where to Learn More' section at the end of Chapter 18.

  2. A certain type of variable star is known to have an average absolute magnitude of 0.0.  Such stars have been observed in a star cluster to have have an apparent magnitude of +16.0.  What is the distance to that star cluster?

  3. Rigel in the constellation of Orion has a temperature about 3 times that of the sun, and a luminosity 64,000 times that of the sun.  What is Rigel's radius compared to the radius of the sun?

  4. Find the density (number of atoms per cubic centimeter) of a  Bok globule (assuming to be made of hydrogen atoms only) having a radius of 1 light-year and a mass of 100 solar masses.  How is this compared with the density in a typical H II region, about 80 to 600 gas particles per cubic centimeter.
