"Exploring Magnetic Field Origins in Low-Mass Young Stars: Inherited or Self-Generated?"

摘要:

It is now widely accepted that the strength of the magnetic field increases significantly from molecular clouds and cores to stellar scales. During the final core collapse phase, it is expected that some of the magnetic field is transferred to the newly formed star. Theoretical models have been unable to agree on the extent of magnetic fields inherited by stars, posing the question: Is the observed magnetic field in low-mass young stars inherited from the properties of dense cores, or does it originate from internal processes within the stars themselves? Thus far, a major challenge has been obtaining magnetic field measurements during the early stages of stellar evolution. In our study, we conducted the first-ever survey of magnetic field strength in Class I and Flat Spectrum protostars. Using high-resolution IR spectroscopy with iSHELL, we obtained results that confirm protostellar sources, with ages less than 1 million years, exhibit magnetic field strengths remarkably similar to those found in Classical T Tauri stars. Given the extremely young ages of these protostellar sources and their strong magnetic fields, it is now possible to place constraints on magnetized core-collapse models and quantify how much of the magnetic field is inherited by forming stars.
