"Probing the co-evolution of galaxies and the circumgalactic medium with large surveys"

時間/地點: 2019-12-12 13:30 [S4-1013]

摘要:

Gas around galaxies, the circumgalactic medium (CGM), plays an essential role in our understanding of galaxy evolution. Being the interface between galaxies and the intergalactic medium, it is the region where gas accretion and outflows --key drivers of galaxy evolution-- leave their signatures. In this talk, I will show that the physical properties of the CGM and the signatures of gas flows can be extracted via a technique called absorption line spectroscopy. I will demonstrate that by applying novel statistical methods to large datasets, we can obtain unprecedented measurements of the galaxy-CGM correlations and address three fundamental questions about the CGM: (1) what are the physical properties of the CGM, (2) how the properties of galaxies and their surrounding gas correlate with each other, and (3) how the properties of galaxies and the CGM co-evolve through cosmic time. Finally, I will discuss the importance of the CGM measurements in constraining the models of galaxy formation and evolution.
