"Lunar Dust Experiments – What can they tell us about life on the Moon?"

時間/地點: 2024-02-23 14:00 [S4-1013]

摘要:

As humans return to the Moon this decade, questions about its surface environment and habitability are increasingly of interest to the exploration and scientific communities. Studying fundamental processes on the Moon will help humans better design a sustained presence there, as well as understand our impact on the lunar environment and the records of the solar system that it holds.

Experiments on dust samples from the Moon can shed some light on these processes. This talk will focus on two sets of lunar dust experiments taking place at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center that tackle the question of habitability on the lunar surface. The first examines the survivability of pre-biotic molecules on the Moon to shed light on the origin of previously discovered organics on Apollo-era samples. The second examines the origin of water on the Moon via hydroxylation – the creation of OH/H2O by combining oxygen atoms in lunar soil with energetic hydrogen plasma from the solar wind.
