"Simulating the Faint Outskirts of Galaxies"

摘要:

Ultra-deep wide-field surveys like LSST and Euclid will soon probe the faint and complex outskirts of galaxies with the kind of statistical rigour that SDSS provided for their brighter parts. We hope this will provide new constraints on the relationship between galaxies and their dark matter halos. However, theoretical expectations for these observations are rather vague, because most cosmological simulations are not particularly well suited to making predictions in the low surface brightness (LSB) regime. I will describe a new program of simulations to address this problem, based on semi-analytic modelling and a “particle tagging” technique. Using results from the first of these simulations, I’ll illustrate some of the open questions for LSB galaxy science. I’ll also introduce the ESA Arrakihs space telescope mission, which will complement the wide-field LSB observations of Euclid.
