摘要:

Supernovae (SNe), or the explosive endpoints of certain stars, are often interpreted as probes into their progenitors’ life cycles. I will discuss how the interaction of SN ejecta with the ambient medium can enhance this probe, allowing us to learn about the progenitor’s mass-loss history, evolution, geometry, and the underlying explosion. I will focus on recent work modeling supernovae from binary systems, where stable mass transfer can substantially reshape the progenitor and produce strongly asymmetric circumstellar material before core collapse. Using multidimensional hydrodynamic simulations coupled to radiation-transport calculations, we show that a single explosion embedded in an asymmetric environment can produce substantially different observables for different viewing angles. In particular, the resulting light curves can span phenomenology commonly associated with distinct supernova subclasses, illustrating how the circumstellar environment can obscure the connection between an observed supernova and its underlying progenitor. I will also briefly highlight complementary work using remnants of thermonuclear SNe to constrain their explosion mechanisms, demonstrating how observations on very different timescales can provide another route to recovering the physics of stellar explosions.
