摘要:
How can we map a region of space that is too small for even the largest of our telescopes to resolve? The answer lies in time. By studying the variability of active galactic nuclei (AGN), we can 'hear' the echoes of the central engine, a technique known as reverberation mapping. In this talk, I will present a multi-layer approach to AGN characterisation that combines the anatomy of the system, derived from photometry, spectroscopy and spectral energy distribution, with its heartbeat: the time-domain variability. I will demonstrate how we can use the upcoming LSST survey to discover the next generation of targets while utilising the Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) network and the Trans-Pacific Two-Meter Telescope (TP2m) to perform the intensive monitoring required to map their structures. Combining these methodologies enables us to shift our perspective of AGN from static points of light to dynamic, evolving systems, ultimately providing a clearer map of the most powerful engines in the universe.
